In time we will understand Einstein as a philosopher and futurist. He left one question that qualified him for both titles when he posed the following: “One must decide if the Universe is a Friendly Place…….or Not.”
There is plenty of proof that the Universe is a dangerous and destructively unfriendly place. From the violent creation of Black Holes to the latest mass shooting at LAX airport, the Universe gladly appears to be a tough, unjust and ruthless place to live. If this is your view, then you will see and experience every kind of destruction and you will create, with your fears, the very things you fear the most. The price for judging the Universe an unfriendly place is a life filled with sad proof.
There is also plenty of proof that the Universe is a friendly place. One of the outcomes of Quantum Physics is that you will begin to see the very things you want to see, only more. When we went looking for galaxies, we figured there might be one or two billion. Now we discover that the smallest and darkest corner in the Universe is a doorway to literally billions of galaxies, currently invisible to all but the most sophisticated telescope. And from this distance, these galaxies look friendly.
The reason Einstein posed this question is because it is the foundation for everything you experience in life. For example, you really cannot say God Is Love and God created the universe and man in his image, and then say it is a dangerous and unfriendly place. It is what God is……….and so are we, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
We have been put here to create with the power that is part of the image in which God created us. We are here to learn to grow and cooperate together in acts of friendship and kindness, acts that will result in a better life for us all. We can only do this when we live unafraid and hopeful.
Right now, our efforts are critical and they sometimes seem fruitless, as the economy and the climate and the world’s religions and uninformed politicians with scads of money seem unable to re-orient themselves to a shift that has already happened within a very large group of global citizens…….including you and me.
We know we have left an unfriendly world and Universe and we have chosen to see, hear, taste and experience a wonderful life in a wonderful Universe. Paul said the secret of this when he wrote in Phillipians 4:
“4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”
Now, we can help others decide about the Universe by living as if there was no other choice than to see a friendly Universe. As we do, we will begin to see ourselves as one with each other and one with the entire Universe. And, there will be less and less room for the folks who want to see a hopeless future or an unblessed present.
